Berthe Morisot, Reading

Berthe Morisot is remarkable given she is one of the only female Impressionists painters of her time. Important is that, as a woman, she was mostly self-taught as she was barred from regular academic training. But with the support of her affluent family and her determination, she was able to continue her studies by copying work at the Louvre and by meeting prominent painters of the day. In the masterpiece Reading, Morisot’s quick brushwork and nuanced tonality show her ability to capture a sense of movement. Her subject, a young woman reading, depicts a simple domestic scene which was a modern choice for the times. Learn more about this masterpiece and the artist with Kristen A.
