N.C. Wyeth, Island Funeral

As one of the most popular and successful illustrators of the 20th century, N.C. Wyeth was constantly in demand for commercial commissions, but he longed to be viewed as a fine artist. His vibrant and captivating work, Island Funeral—inspired by the funeral of Maine fisherman Rufus Teel—is the result of his desire to create fine art.
