Oceti Sakowin Oyate (Sioux)
Oceti Sakowin Oyate means Seven Council Fires and refers to an ancient people thought to have inhabited the Mississippi River Valley for thousands of years and the northern plains and Great Lakes region for hundreds of years before the European occupation. They include the Dakota, Lakota and Nakota peoples. The Oceti Sakowin Oyate have historically been called the Sioux, a word thought to result from a French translation of a different Native people that was then further transformed by English settlers. Oceti Sakowin Oyate is preferred over Sioux.
