Symbolism
Symbolism refers to a style which sought to reject materialism and embrace the spiritual significance of art. Their subject matter often includes dreams and visions. Symbolist artists practiced a diverse array of styles, but in general favored idealism over realism, suggestion over specificity, and subjective expression over objective representation.
