Coming Soon: Performance: An Overlooked Thread of Twentieth-Century Art

This chapter traces the historical precedents for masquerade back to the 15th century and identifies the forms of popular entertainment that artists drew on directly—including minstrelsy—to collapse the distinction between art and life through the development of what art historians today term performance art.
