New York School

The term New York School is sometimes used as an umbrella for 1st and 2nd generation Abstract Expressionism and its aftermath. However, on Smarthistory, we use a more precise definition referring to the art produced after Abstract Expressionism's initial impulse so beginning circa 1955. This includes Color Field painting, and just about everything Clement Greenberg championed after 1955 (Noland, etc.). Frank Stella's Black paintings, Frankenthaler and Louis stain paintings, also Hartigan, Sam Francis and figurative artists including Rivers, Porter, Katz, Perlstein etc.
